The Manta Desk

I made this desk for a client who was looking for a piano desk for his daughter. He wasn’t satisfied with what was available and reached out. We discussed his needs including the dimensions, preferred material, and overall look. He wanted a piece which would eventually belong to his grandkids.

I used 2x2 inch thick Walnut for the legs, 1.25-inch-thick walnut for the base, sides and top. The sides connect to the base with half laps and Walnut dowels. Dados connect the sides to the legs. The base connects to the legs with four Maloof joints and the top connects to the rear legs with two Maloof joints. The lid connects to the top using three SOS hinges and includes a soft close feature. For the back I used hardboard and painted it black and incorporated a cable management system for the piano. This desk is approx. 55w x 18d x 32h inches.

The front of the lid is a live edge and its natural form has been matched with an intentional indent at the bottom to create a slot for the user to open and close the lid. For extra strength the lid is doweled in to the top and at the back. Thus creating the Manta Ray look after which the desk is named.

I added a touch of contrast with jet black resin to highlight the front.
