The iconic Sam Maloof low-back dining chair—what Sam himself called his finest creation!
When I first started woodworking, the idea of tackling this chair felt daunting. Every component—seat, backrest, armrests, and legs—requires careful sculpting. Each piece connects at a precise angle, demanding a meticulous and well-thought-out plan. One mistake, and you have to start over.
After eight months of planning and labor, I completed my first Sam Maloof-inspired chair, as documented here. Crafting this piece has been a true exercise in patience and perseverance. I’ve spent countless hours admiring the finished chair, reflecting on Sam Maloof’s genius and why this chair stands as a pinnacle of craftsmanship.
Below, I’ve documented two versions: one in Maple and the other in Walnut. This design can also be beautifully executed in Oak or Cherry… very tempted to do exactly that for our dining table, will make a set of four each in a different wood… hmmm.
