I made this chair for myself—a comfortable, beautiful place to hang out, watch YouTube, read, and do research. Known to some as, taking naps. My goal was for it to “defy gravity,” supporting my body so that it’s easy on my back and doesn’t rely on typical 90-degree angles. I also didn’t use traditional joinery methods like Maloof joints. Instead, I challenged myself to use only glue and wood blocks as needed, then sculpt it all into one organic, natural form.
While this piece was inspired by a particular chair design, my own decisions led to something different. It feels like a Sam Maloof dining chair and a Muskoka chair hybrid — a unique blend that I didn’t entirely plan, but one I absolutely adore. I aimed to see how far I can take blocks of wood and sculpt them into a cohesive form. In that regard, I think I’ve achieved my goal.
